Local need

Families on Cilacap's southern coast depend on catches that rise and fall with season and weather. When waves are high, fishers stay ashore while household costs continue. Women do much of the processing and selling but rarely receive business training.

Aim

Reduce dependence on a single income source and help families get through the lean months.

Who takes part

Fishing and coastal farming families, and women's processing groups.

Activities

  • Mapping seasonal calendars, income sources and weather risks with residents.
  • Training on processing sea and garden produce to food-safety standards.
  • Strengthening women's groups: bookkeeping, marketing and group savings.
  • Household financial plans for the lean season.
  • Planting coastal vegetation and home food gardens where conditions allow.

How it works

  1. Seasonal map

Residents map busy and lean months, then choose activities to fill the gaps.

  2. Start small

Products are tested in small batches before scaling up.

  3. Groups & savings

Women's groups run production, bookkeeping and shared savings.

What we track

  • Number of household income sources across the year
  • Group businesses operating and their financial records
  • Food-safety practices in processed products
  • Coastal vegetation and home gardens established

These are the things assessed during the programme, not verified results. Results are reported after delivery and checks.

Ways to collaborate

  • Buyers of coastal food products and local retail networks.
  • Government coastal-resilience and fisheries programmes.
  • CSR partners for shared processing facilities.
