Community Water & Solar Energy

Shared water services for homes and gardens, with solar pumps where the source allows, run by operators and rules agreed by residents.

Local need

In villages across southern Central Java and Kulon Progo, demand for household and garden water rises in the dry season while sources lie far away or below the settlement. Facilities built without operators, user fees and rules often stop working after a few seasons.

Aim

Provide a reliable year-round water service with running costs residents can afford, while protecting the source and its catchment.

Who takes part

Households and farmer groups in villages facing seasonal water shortages, together with village water committees and operators.

Activities

  • Source study: seasonal flow, water quality, user rights and household and garden demand.
  • Service design: well or spring capture, solar pump, elevated tank and gravity distribution.
  • Setting up a water committee, operators, user fees and dry-season priority rules.
  • Soil conservation and planting in the catchment.
  • Monitoring how the system works and handling complaints.

Water service cycle

  1. Study the sourceFlow, quality and user rights are checked before design.
  2. DesignPump and tank sizes follow demand and what users can pay.
  3. OrganiseCommittee, operators, fees and rules are agreed before operation.
  4. Monitor & maintainWater volume, fee balance and repairs are recorded monthly.

What we track

  • Daily water volume and dry-season availability
  • Households served
  • Fee balance, maintenance records and repairs completed
  • Catchment condition

These are the things assessed during the programme, not verified results. Results are reported after delivery and checks.

Ways to collaborate

  • Energy and water CSR partners who want to fund facilities with clear management.
  • Village governments, on village funds and shared assets.
  • Solar-pump suppliers and hydrology specialists.
