Family Financial Skills

Trainers from farmer organisations are trained and assessed, then coach families to record seasonal cash flow, debt, savings and business decisions.

Local need

Farm income arrives by season while household spending, farm costs and loan repayments come every month. One-off financial training seldom changes habits unless it continues with support at home.

Aim

Build a financial-learning system owned by farmer organisations: competent trainers, families who record and plan, and data shared only with each family's consent.

Who takes part

Trainer candidates from 10 farmer organisations and member families in Java and Sulawesi.

Activities

  • Ten training-of-trainer courses, each linked to one farmer organisation.
  • Competency assessment: only those who demonstrate the skills go on to train others.
  • Seventeen cascade workshops, at least nine observed directly.
  • Household visits to put cash-flow records, seasonal plans and savings into practice.
  • Consolidating verified, anonymised records for organisational learning.

Record, reflect, act

  1. RecordFamilies record income, spending and debt using a simple pictorial format.
  2. ReflectWith the trainer, families read seasonal patterns and set priorities.
  3. ActSmall decisions are carried out and checked at the next visit.

What we track

  • Trainers passing the competency assessment (target: at least 100)
  • Cascade workshops held and observed
  • Families actively recording and using financial plans
  • Family consent for data use

These are the things assessed during the programme, not verified results. Results are reported after delivery and checks.

Ways to collaborate

  • Farmer organisations and cooperatives that want in-house financial trainers.
  • Inclusive finance providers and consumer-protection programmes.
  • Donors supporting expansion to other regions.
